WHY?! “Even the most stubborn crease can be smoothed.” Lady Irons
“HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS?” I hear you cry.
Right, let me take you back. It was 2014, and I was sitting in my London flat (Sydenham, if we’re getting specific), watching late-night telly. My wife was ironing a blouse for work. Once she’d finished pressing the fine Primark garment, she left the blouse hanging on the ironing board and propped the board upright.
With the board standing there, arms out right and blouse draped over it, glistening in the moonlight, something clicked. The ironing board looked like a woman. (Explains why I don’t have a ‘proper job, doesn’t it?) My brain spiralled off. I started imagining a world where ironing boards lived among us, side-by-side with humans.
I wrote a routine and took it to a try-out at one of the alt comedy nights in London. Boom! It landed. What started as a 5-minute bit grew to 10, then 20, and after a few years, I thought, “Could this be a whole show? Just me and ironing boards?!”
So, I called up the ridiculously talented Ben Target and pitched the idea. He loved the idea. We carved out a full 53-minute show and took it to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022 – the first one post-Covid. It went down well. Soho Theatre got wind and offered a two-night run. After that, I parked the show for a year or so.
Then, one night, while ironing a t-shirt, I had a thought – there’s more to be mined from Ironing Board Man. But it needed something new. A twist. A polish. It needed a bit of sparkle and something that would make it easier to sell. Because honestly, it’s a show anyone could enjoy. Any age, really. And then—boom! t should be more superhero-ish, with even more ironing boards and packed with sly ironing puns.
Keeping the show’s original charm, I reworked it from top to bottom and rebranded it – it flew at Edinburgh Fringe 2024. Full houses, standing ovations. A tour booker picked it up, and now I’m heading out on tour in September 2025. But first, another Edinburgh Fringe run.
The moral of the WHY? If my wife hadn’t left that blouse hanging on the ironing board, there’d be no Ironing Board Man. And you wouldn’t be reading this now…
